New Home DIY Projects

So you’ve finally taken the leap and bought your first home but you quickly realize that it could use some work. When it comes to renovating and remodeling, the first question you should be asking yourself is whether you should do the work yourself or hire a pro. Although most home renos will require professional work, here are some cheap and simple projects that anyone can undertake to update their home.

1- The entrance

This is much more important than it seems. It’s the first part of your home that anyone sees and therefore its appearance should be up to par. You’re going to want to start off by changing or even just painting your front door to get rid of those scratches and that dull look. A bold accent colour that matches the exterior of the house should do just the trick! Typically we recommend that homeowners choose a darker colour as it will have the presence of a bold colour while avoiding an eyesore. Strong colours such as burgundy and grey will really improve curb-side appeal. While you’re at it, why not change up the mailbox to match and even your house number sign to modernize the look. For only a couple hundred bucks, your neighbours are going to be wondering what changed and how your house looks so much newer.

2- The cabinets

If your kitchen hasn’t been updated in the last 10 years, then chances are that your cabinets and drawers need to join us in 2018. Kitchens tend to be trend driven and therefore, ensuring that your cabinets are up-to-date can be one of the greatest investments. It is crucial that you determine whether or not you have the budget for new cabinets as they can get quite expensive very fast. Ideally, if your kitchen is standard we recommend that you look at out-of-the-box cabinets since a custom job can cost thousands more and is generally hardly noticeable. On the other hand, some kitchens tend to have strange dimensions and therefore we recommend a visit to your local cabinet store to view some options. Now, if you aren’t looking to spend thousands of dollars and go through the trouble of installing brand new cabinets, a fresh coat of paint can go a long way.

3- Repaint

You’re in luck! Typically when buying a new home, this is the most commonly undertaken renovation and for good reason. Painting is in fact among the best investments for return on investment and can completely change a room. Moreover, it is in fact the most commonly recommended DIY project because it’s cheap, quick, simple and effective. There are a couple ways of going about painting. Although separately applying the primer and then the paint will save you some money, we tend to recommend going for an all-in-one solution which will save you a lot of time and reduce the chances of streaks. We tend to recommend that you update your paint every 5 years to change the look of your rooms, maintain a trendy appearance and finally get rid of all those scratches and other imperfections that start to appear after time.

4- Update your appliances

Although most people may not be considered as a DIY reno project, it is definitely something that you’re going to want to consider. It may seem obvious or even quite straight forward, but many homeowners don’t even consider this when looking for ways to update their homes appearance. We have two basic rules when it comes to changing your appliances, i) make sure that you go for stainless steel and ii) match sure that all the pieces are from the same set. Although it may seem quite expensive to change all your appliances, moving from those old white appliances to new stainless steel ones and changing your cabinets will make it seem like you spent a million bucks completely renovating your kitchen.
